This guided tour explores the central role that craft guilds played in shaping Barcelona’s historical development. As we walk through the city’s oldest quarters, the Ciutat Vella, we will focus on the political, economic, social, and religious functions fulfilled by the guilds from the medieval period to the early modern era. Moving from guildhalls and devotional chapels to specialised streets and the key public institutions that governed guild life, the tour aims to contextualise the complex history of Barcelona’s trades and corporate structures through the material evidence that still survives in the city’s urban fabric today.

Maximum group size: 20 participants

Booking: Through the Conference registration process

Duration: 2 hours

June 19

Departure: Plaça de Catalunya
Time: 9:30 a.m. (return to Barcelona around 5:00 p.m.)

This excursion departs from Barcelona and offers participants the opportunity to explore one of Catalonia’s most emblematic heritage sites: the historic Codorníu Cava Cellars. Designed by the renowned Modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the winery complex—often referred to as the Cathedral of Cava—is considered a landmark of industrial Modernism.

Following the guided tour, a specialist in the history of viticulture in Catalonia will deliver an engaging lecture, providing deeper insight into the cultural and historical evolution of vine growing in the region and its connection to the development of cava. This expert session will enrich participants’ understanding and situate the visit within the broader context of Catalonia’s centuries-old winemaking tradition.

After the lecture, we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant serving traditional Catalan cuisine, and will return to Barcelona in the afternoon.

Maximum group size: 55 participants (minimum 25 participants)
Price: 70 euros
